Work during a pandemic – 5 tips to overcome Zoom fatigue

Due to the pandemic, most of us have transitioned to working from home.  If you are working in the social media, live streamer, and influencer space, you’re probably used to working from home most of the time while occasionally attending brand events, meetings and collaborating with other creators in person.  However, now with the pandemic, the very little social interaction that we had during work has been taken away.  In-person meetings and events are now hosted on Zoom, and as a result, most of us are experiencing headaches and zoom fatigue.

Virtual meetings and events are here to stay for a little while, so in the meantime, here are some tips on how to overcome zoom fatigue:

  1. Create a schedule – Plan ahead your workdays for the week. Make a to-do list for each day and set times for each task.

  1. Schedule in breaks – Taking breaks is important. Make sure you are scheduling breaks and screen-free time for yourself to recharge. If you are sharing your schedule with your team, try to allocate ‘meeting-free’ times so you and your team always have set hours where you can focus on your own tasks.
  2. If possible, replace video calls with voice calls or text and email communication – We can often replace video communication with a quick message, text, email. Try to make use of collaborative tools like G-Suite, where you can collaboratively work with your coworkers together on projects.
  3. Shorten meetings – Not all meetings have to be an hour long. Try to shorten your meetings to 30 or 45 minutes maximum so meetings don’t end up dragging on longer than needed.

  1. Create an agenda – Prior to your meetings, create an agenda and write down any topics and questions you would like to bring up to the team and encourage all your team members to do the same. That way, you go into your meetings knowing exactly what you’re going to discuss, saving time. This can help shorten meetings too.

Here are my five tips on how to overcome zoom fatigue!  Note that it applies to all video conferencing applications – Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, or whichever platform you are using, not just Zoom!  If you have any tips that I haven’t mentioned, feel free to leave them in the comments below – I’m sure we could all use them during these unprecedented times.
